The Construction Process

Below, you will find the construction process broken down into a series of stages. Read through these to get a sense of what to expect as your project moves from drawings on paper into three dimensional reality.

Step 1

Getting Ready to Build

It’s time to prepare for the build as a team, and to make a plan for how things will be constructed. Protecting sensitive elements (such as special trees) and utilities, and creating a secure site will ensure that this next phase goes smoothly.

Demo and Recycling

How can you reduce, repurpose, and recycle as you pursue a new construction project? Let us tell you how.

Step 3

Grading and Underground Systems

It’s time to create the elements that will provide the support for everything else. While these may be largely invisible once the project is complete, the underground systems, foundations, and shaping of the ground are critical to the project.

Step 4

Constructing Walls and Structures

As walls and structures get built, you will watch the form of the design come to life before your eyes. These are some of the main elements that will give structure and shape to the new play and outdoor learning spaces.

Step 5

Paving and Ground Surfaces

What will students run, dance, and jump on? Ground surfaces and paving are an important component of the construction process, and a great opportunity to introduce sustainable elements to the school ground. Along with walls and structures, the ground surfaces form a major component of the school yard environment.

Step 6

Plants, Turf, and Irrigation

Once the ground surface materials have been installed, it’s time for softscaping! Also known as…time to put down the topsoil and install plants and turf, along with a proper irrigation system to keep them happy and healthy.

Step 7

Site Furnishings, Equipment & Lighting

After the rest of the construction is complete, it’s time to install the final components, and see the whole project come together. This includes site furnishings such as benches and bins, play equipment, and lighting.

Step 8

Ribbon Cutting Ceremony

Officially open your new outdoor play and learning environment with a ribbon cutting, and a small ceremony. You’ve worked hard on putting this project together, now it’s time to watch the students and school community members enjoy the benefits of the new space.

Step 9

Post Construction Warranty Period

For the first year after construction, owners are protected by warranties. In some cases, these warranties may extend beyond this initial year. Read through the text below to gain an understanding of what the different roles of the owner, contractor, and consultants are during this crucial period.
