This square acts as a schoolyard for a nearby primary school, as well as a public space. In the catchment area for the square is a home for the elderly, a business centre, a theatre, and housing. Bekkering Adams architects took an empty asphalt space and transformed it into a lively public space that is divided between a play area and a sports court.
This project was done in partnership with the community – the school, parents, and people from the neighbourhood. The resulting design offers play opportunities for people of all ages.
Bordering the square is a green hedge and a series of trees, which in combination with the green poured rubber surface, relates to the theme of a secret garden. One of the main things that came out of the public consultation process was a request for more green space.
