This playground is located in Nørrebroparken, a green zone in Copenhagen offering adventures for both children and adults. MONSTRUM participated in a renovation of the park and designed a playground with the majority of elements designed to be challenging for older children. The playground was designed in cooperation with GHB Landscape Architects for the City of Copenhagen.
MONSTRUM’s playground designs revolve around strong storytelling. This playground tells the story of a pilot who has been on a long expedition across the Bermuda Triangle, when he loses control of his plane and drops toward the sea. The playground consists of a wrecked plane in two parts, the rear end of a galleon, a slide, swings, a whale, a rescue ship, a sandbox, and many balancing challenges. Sand is used as a safety surface in this playground design.
Climbing holds mounted on the side of the galleon allow children to scramble up the side, and then they can use a wide slide that can accommodate two people at a time to return back to the ground. A ladder leads up into the cockpit of the plane, and the inside of the wrecked galleon is also accessible. All of these elements allow for a very diverse range of play opportunities, allowing kids to choose a level of challenge that they feel comfortable with.
