Designed to fit with the maritime theme of the nearby arena, this playground was built to provide new activity options for children in the Swedish town of Höganäs. MONSTRUM’s playground designs typically feature imaginative wood elements with a strong theme or story, and this one is no exception.
The playground is located in the centre of a large open area, with a soft surface made up of sand. The painted wood play environment features a large cargo ship that has lost its load of wooden crates and a lighthouse. A smaller slide can be accessed via the deck of the ship, while a larger slide aimed at older children starts on the upper level of the lighthouse. For children looking for a quieter, shady space, an enclosed area can be found underneath the sunken ship.
The play elements are connected using a series of wooden beams, which provide a challenging play opportunity that allows children to develop their sense of balance. In addition, the lighthouse is clad in climbing holds that appeal to bigger kids. As a result, this playground is able to target a wide age range, allowing children to decide what level of challenge they would like to take on.
