Carve was asked by the municipality of the Hague to design an integrated play facility that eliminated the difference in play between children with disabilities and those without them. The playground is designed with the capabilities of children with disabilities in mind, without focusing on their limitations. The design offers increasing challenges for all children, providing play without limitations.
This playground is located on an existing lawn, and is meant to evoke the form of a folded red blanket. A series of creases lie in between a gently sloping ramp, providing a variety of angles. This play “field” provides a seemingly limitless variety of undefined possibilities, inviting children to use their imaginations. Intersecting routes allow children with different abilities to meet and help each other. Different climbing grips and tactile elements, a rubber mat, whistler tubes, a wide slide, a ‘concave’ turntable, and a hammock swing create additional play elements.
