Asphalt

While it may not seem very exciting, there are several important considerations when looking at asphalt as a surfacing material. This is an inexpensive way to cover large areas of the schoolyard, and it can be made more interesting by using it to construct mounds or adding painted patterns. Using porous or permeable asphalt surfacing will reduce groundwater runoff and make the surface a more desirable play space even in inclement weather. This asphalt essentially allows water to pass right through, reducing issues such as puddles during rain events – it can also double as a learning tool that can be used to discuss sustainable practices and the hydrological cycle.
