At first glance, designing railings may seem like one of the more mundane tasks when creating a new play environment. However, railings will be used throughout the play environment to increase accessibility and provide safe access to various areas of the school yard. As a result, they have the potential to make a strong contribution to the overall aesthetic of the design, and to make play more fun for students. Different colourful materials can be used, such as powder-coated metal, and different gauges of pipes can facilitate the grips of different sized hands. Undulating or angled bars can create fun effects – while railings must adhere to building codes, there are still many creative approaches that can be taken.
