A rain garden is an excellent way to deal with stormwater on the school grounds, while also creating an aesthetic pleasing space. What is a rain garden? Typically small in scale, these gardens function in both wet and dry conditions, and fill with a few inches of water during a storm event. Plants are usually hardy native plants that can withstand runoff that is pollutant-rich, such as that from a parking lot. Often these plants can be used to remove these toxic pollutants from the water, effectively cleaning it. Rain gardens provide an excellent learning opportunity that can be integrated into a number of lesson plans.
