Ground Surfaces
When you begin thinking about ground surfaces, it is important to map out the amount of foot traffic each area of the schoolyard will see. High use areas require more durable materials. Try to consider the permeability (need to define) of each material, and use porous materials where possible. In addition, you need to think about safety surfaces, or which types of soft material to use in fall zones under play equipment. Don’t be afraid to add a splash of colour, or an unexpected element, like purple sand! Ground surfaces don’t have to be boring.
