Playful Proposals
These projects have been designed by landscape architecture students at the University of British Columbia (UBC), featuring outside-the-box ideas based on real schools in Vancouver.
For several years, the Landscape Architecture department at UBC taught a second-year construction studio in collaboration with the Vancouver School Board. Focused on teaching students how to take a design from conception to construction, this course asked students to design both a schoolyard and all the individual elements within it. Beginning with students creating construction documents for simple elements such as paving, the course culminated in groups of students creating schoolyard proposals for real schools in the City of Vancouver. These studios ultimately became the basis for the development of this website.
Here you will find descriptions of student groups and their projects, including which school they were exploring and a summary of major lessons learned from these projects to help you with the design of your own play project.
